Africa Foundation, with help from generous donors, completed the construction of a new health facility called Mange Health Post in late 2021, after an extensive period of consultation with the KwaNgwenya community, and district and provincial health authorities . The health post has been open to patients since January 2022 as a base for visiting clinicians. The health post has two consultation rooms, a waiting area, a kitchenette for staff, undercover ambulance area, a dispensary, as well as two sets of enviro loo toilets (one for ladies and one for men) and a borehole.
Africa Foundation is raising funds to construct accommodation for two nurses. The provision of nurse’s accommodation will assist in upgrading the health post to a clinic because having nurses on site will allow the clinic to open Monday to Friday 8am – 4pm. In KwaNgwenya having nurses stay on site means they can attend to medical emergencies, accidents and childbirths that occur after hours. Once the site is upgraded to a clinic, a doctor will be deployed to the site twice a week.

KwaNgwenya is a rural and dispersed community and service delivery and provision suffers as a result. The population is around 20,000, with 8 Indunas or Chiefs that preside over the area. There are 7 creches and 6 primary schools. In the last decade, access to secondary education has improved with now 5 high schools in the area. However, health provision has lagged and the development of the Health post and the proposed transformation to a permanent clinic will make a transformational difference to the health outcomes of this community.
Before the health post was open a mobile clinic was deployed fortnightly in KwaNgwenya community, stopping at four sites for two hours at each site. The permanent health post has dramatically improved the provision of services to the patients, affording them privacy with the consultation rooms, comfort with the waiting area, dignity with the toilets and hygiene from fresh water. Currently, two nurses from Bethesda Hospital come to the health post every Tuesday and Thursday.
