Ololosokwan Community is the closest community to &Beyond Klein’s camp, situated within the Pololeti Game Reserve, Tanzania. Africa Foundation and &Beyond have a long-standing relationship with the communities of Ololosokwan, since 2006.
The community of Ololosokwan is dispersed over a large area which results in many children having to walk long distances to access the school. Ololosokwan Primary has therefore begun establishing dormitory facilities, so that learners can sleep over at the school. The school initially constructed a simple structure to house 80 boys and 80 girls. Parents were responsible for providing mattresses, bedding and amenities for boarders, but, as many were not able to meet these needs, a lot of children were left sleeping on the floor, without adequate bedding and supplies.
Ololosokwan ward, is situated within the Arusha region in Ngorongoro district, in Loliondo division. It incorporates several villages, including Ololosokwan, Sero and Meirowa, that border on Serengeti National Park’s eastern border, and the Kenya border to the north. The residents are predominantly Maasai agro-pastoralists, with a small minority of immigrant agriculturalists such as the Wambulu who come from other localities in northern Tanzania. The total population of Ololosokwan village is around 6 000 people.
The Maasai community are very proud of their culture and are very happy to keep and live it. They do not use game meat and therefore are well known to easily co-exist with wildlife unlike many other tribes neighbouring conservation areas. Africa Foundation and andBeyond have partnered with the Ololosokwan, Meirowa and Sero communities, for over 15 years, supporting their sustainable development, with a legacy focus on Ololosokwan Clinic and Primary School, Meirowa Primary School and Sero Clinic.
