Lukungu Primary school was one of the few rural schools to already have a pre-school facility with good attendance. The children in the village of Mwamamole could not access it though as the walk is approximately 3km and through an area with roaming buffalo. Also, during the rains, large puddles make sections of the route unpassable. Mwamamole Creche was established as a satellite pre-school, by a community volunteer, a gentleman named Dhotto, with the support of other community members including the Chief. The creche has 47 children registered however it has no formal infrastructure. The lessons which are 4 hours a day, Monday – Friday are delivered under a tree, with the children sitting on bricks, which the community had started to contribute towards the eventual building of the pre-school. Despite these circumstances the teacher goes to great lengths to educate his students. He has received Government training and he has a chalkboard propped against a tree, using resource books to teach from. On rainy days a member of the community living nearby allows the use of his house.
The community of Lukungu is located in Lamadi Ward, on the eastern shores of Lake Victoria in Tanzania. Lukungu has a population of approximately 4,000 people, over 654 households (an average of 6 people per household). Due to the community location, fishing is one of the major economic activities, others include small scale farming- growing mainly cotton and maize as well as rice. Located on the main road, Lukungu is 10 km from the busy trading centre of Lamadi which has a population of almost 30,000 people. While Lamadi is well serviced with banks, clinics, primary and secondary schools, guest houses, shops and a police station, a kilometre outside of Lamadi, it soon becomes very rural and the village of Lukungu consists of only a primary school, and a secondary school currently under construction by the community, and a small medical dispensary. The missionary hospital is 20km from Lukungu in Mkula. Mwamalole is a sub village of Lukungu main village, located approx. 3 km away, with a population of 620 people over 95 dwellings.
