Africa Foundation has been working with Lukungu Primary School since 2006. The school was established in 1960 and has expanded over time to meet the changing needs and demands of the community. The school has also grown to offer high school education, which is fantastic for the development of the youth in this area. There are over 1000 children enrolled at the school, all of whom come from the surrounding community. It is close and safe enough for the children to walk to and from school, as there is no boarding facilities at the school. Africa Foundation supported the school to encompass a pre-school and a center for orphaned and vulnerable children, a result of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Africa Foundation have also built a kitchen and dining, 2 blocks of ablutions for the children and teachers’ ablutions. The most recent support was the construction a of teacher’s accommodation and renovations to the existing houses. With just over a 1000 children enrolled and 2 blocks of ablution toilets, every toilet cubical has a ration of 100 children. Improved access to proper toilets reduces the risk of children contracting diarrhea and other infections, helping reduce absenteeism. Africa Foundation are fundraising for the construction of additional classrooms.
