Kigomani Primary School is in the community of Kigomani close to andBeyond Mnemba Island Lodge in Zanzibar. The community is characterized by extreme poverty, high rates of unemployment and generally very limited resources. It is situated in a remote area which means it is removed from the main vein of service delivery; and community members are forced to take care of their own development with very limited financial resources to do so.
There were three needs prioritised by the community leadership for this school (1) Repairs to classroom roofs, (2) installation of tanks and gutters to capture and store rainwater; (3) building of additional ablutions. Africa Foundation has since successfully implemented these priorities at the school.
Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous state within Tanzania, with a population of approx. 1.7 million in 2021. Unguja, commonly referred to as Zanzibar Island, is the largest and most populated island in the Zanzibar Archipelago. Tourism is it’s major economic contributor and aside from the tourist industry, employment opportunities are few, particularly for those living outside of the capital, Stone Town.
Most people engage in small scale fishing and crop production. Unguja relies heavily on imported goods and consequently has a very high cost of living. Its reliance on importing raw materials make the cost of construction also very expensive. Main imports for construction include machinery, metal, minerals, stone and wood, which are all basic needs for construction.
Africa Foundation has been active in Northern Unguja since 2006 with dedicated staff in the region since 2016. Our community work is currently focused on 6 communities directly associated with Mnemba Atoll.
Kigomani village is tucked away on the north-eastern coast of Zanzibar (in Swahili, Unguja) Island in the Zanzibar Archipelago. A shortage of facilities and almost non-existent service delivery is the norm for this community of approximately 500 households or 3 200 people.
