Ganyani Creche is situated in the village of Hluvekani, in the Greater Kruger region. The creche was established in 1999 to provide a safe space for the children of this isolated village to access early childhood development facilities and activities. The creche has very basic infrastructure consisting of 2 very small classrooms – the construction of which was funded by the National Development Agency. The classrooms are approximately 30m2 in size, and cannot comfortably accommodate the 81 children now enrolled at the creche. In addition, there is one pit toilet with 4 holes, but not divided into separate cubicles. There is a small room which is used as a kitchen, but it is not conducive to the safe storage and preparation of food. There is a borehole at the creche but it is not functional and requires assessment to understand if and how it can be made operational again.
Africa Foundation is fundraising to ensure that Ganyani Creche meets the Department of Social Development standards, the funds will be used for enviroloos, a kitchen with dining area, a play area and fencing
Hluvukani is a rural village characterised by high levels of poverty. This community is almost entirely surrounded by wildlife areas which has worsened their level of deprivation. Many people rely on Government grants while others find work in nearby farms or tourist lodges. Service delivery in the area is sparse, in particular access to water is extremely limited in this area and waste management services are scarce leading to an unhealthy amount of rubbish in the environment. The road infrastructure, although improving, is poor and public transport options are limited.
Africa Foundation has been actively involved in Hluvukani since 2016, focusing on projects such as; Early Childhood Development Centers, Primary and Secondary Schools. Community members have also benefited from CLEF tertiary level education bursaries, as well as Enterprise Development initiates, such as empowering young entrepreneurs through the Hustle Economy program.
