PA Schmidt Primary school is one of 2 schools in Maltahohe and caters for Grades 1 to 7. It has an enrollment of 959, 715 of whom considered vulnerable children. Legacy andBeyond and Africa Foundation projects include the addition of a dining hall, kitchen, storeroom and ablution block, and support for the school-based feeding scheme for over 700 scholars.
Education is a way out of poverty for many, and a feeding scheme at school is an integral part of the education system of these children. Food provided helps improve concentration because it is difficult to pay attention on an empty stomach. The feeding scheme takes the burden of feeding children off impoverished parents’ shoulders, as their children are guaranteed a meal at school. Both lodge guests and Africa Foundation have been integral to the success of this long-term initiative. To continue this great initiative, the school needs to continued support to provide a meal for five days for 500 children.
Matlahohe community is in the southern part of Namibia, about 110 kilometres west of Mariental. There is one school in this village, which is Daweb school, that has an enrolment of about 1000 children, of which 422 children are orphans and vulnerable children. The school enrolls pupils from grade 1 to 12. Government have mandated schools to offer nutrition programs ensuring that children receive at least one meal a day. However these governments require that the community members provide the required infrastructure.
For over 15 years, &BEYOND Sossusvlei Desert Lodge and Africa Foundation collaborated with the community to find sustainable ways to support the community, through a feeding programme for the children of the Daweb school.
