Happy Homes Crèche is in Bushbuckridge Municipality within the Justicia Community in rural Mpumalanga, South Africa. This Crèche was started in 2001 with just 28 children. At first, a corrugated iron shack was used as a classroom. In 2003, Africa Foundation facilitated the building of the first two brick and mortar classrooms at Happy Homes. Since then, the crèche has continued to develop in terms of its resources; but so too has the popularity of the school and its enrollment. Today the crèche has an enrollment of 155 children who are accommodated in four classrooms. Africa Foundation are currently fundraising for a dining room at Happy Homes Crèche.
Since its establishment, Happy Homes Crèche has been rebuilt by the hearts of many generous donors. It is a living example of what is possible through the collective effort of individuals seeking to make a difference.
Today, the old makeshift crèche has been transformed into an immaculate school building where parents feel confident and proud to bring their children. Since 2001, ongoing donations from dedicated donors have helped to build five classrooms, a playground, a kitchen, a new sanitation block and a vegetable garden where fresh produce is harvested to boost the nutritional value of the lunchtime meal. The latest addition to the school is a fully equipped infant classroom, which has help separate infants from the older children, allowing for age-appropriate care and activities. Serving meals in a dining setting helps children learn the routine and manners that go with mealtimes, a dining room will allow for meals to be served and consumed in safe and secure place that allows for children to practice socials skills.
