Kilimamoja Secondary School was established in 2007 in response to the needs of Kilimamoja and Huduma communities for access to secondary level education. 262 pupils enrolled when the school opened in 2007. As the infrastructure has continued to improved, the school has grown. The current enrolment is 625 students, 330 girls and 295 boys.
Africa Foundation and andBeyond first supported the school through the construction and equipping of three science laboratories. Each room capable of seating 45 students, and specifically designed to support the teaching requirements for Chemistry, Physics and Biology. With many of the students walking distances to attend school each day, the school leadership resolved that boarding facilities would improve attendance, improve learner safety and improve academic performance. In 2019, we were able to support the construction of two dormitory blocks, one for girls and one for boys, each able to sleep 64 students.
The community of Kilimamoja in Tanzania is located north of Lake Manyara and east of the Ngorongoro Conservation area. It consists of around 1,000 households and has a population of around 5 300 people. Although close to the main access road to Karato town and the Lake Manyara airstrip, the village itself is very under-served, and is characterised by extremely poor infrastructure and untarred roads. There is no Government medical facility, and the local schools are desperately under-resourced.
The area is very dry and consequently food insecurity is a serious issue. Main activities of villagers of this areas is subsistence farming and keeping very few livestock. The land is very bare with no vegetation at all and the inability to farm productively is the main cause of the poor economic status of the area. The community lives adjacent to Lake Manyara National Park, along the main enroute to Ngorongoro Crater areas. The school is the priority Future Foundations Secondary Education project for andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.
