Mayoka Clinic is located in the community of Mayoka close to andBeyond Lake Manyara Tree Lodge in Tanzania. The clinic was built in 1985 as a medical dispensary by missionaries working in the area. It provides basic medical services to the people of Moya and Moyoka communities. With support from the Tanzania Ministry of Health, the clinic has 3 permanent employees: a doctor and 2 nurses. Previously, the community supported the clinic by paying other 3 staff to assist in vaccinations and reproductive child health care. The Clinic’s current infrastructure consists of six rooms for patient treatment and vaccinations, a set of ablutions, a doctors’ accommodation unit and a nurse’s accommodation unit.
Africa Foundation and &Beyond, with assistance from several donors, have supported the clinic by renovating the central buildings, installing a solar energy plant, and constructing the doctor and nurse accommodation units. Donors through Africa Foundation and andBeyond participate in the clinic’s daily operations by contributing to the provision of supplies, equipment and commodities. This partnership expands the reach of the clinic and enhances the quality of its services.
Mayoka Clinic provides treatment to an average of 400 patients per week. The clinic facilities are badly depreciated, this is because facilities are overused. Africa Foundation aims to improve access to medical care by fundraising to construct a dedicated building at the clinic for Reproductive and Children’s Health (RCH). The dedicated building will provide antenatal, delivery and post-partum care, infant/childcare, contraceptives, treatment of gynecological problems, reproductive tract infections (RTIs) and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and responsible parenthood.
Mayoka is a rural community in the Manyara region of Tanzania, just close to Lake Manyara. Mayoka community has approximately a population of about 8,213 residents and just under 900 households. Like most of rural Tanzania, the community is dependent on subsistence farminga and rearing livestock. Because of its proximity to Lake Manyara, tourism provides the only formal employment to the community.
While progress has been made to improve access to primary health care and education, challenges still persist. The clinic needs to be significantly expanded and upgraded. The schools require ongoing investment to improve infrastructure and attract better qualified teachers. There is also a need for educational resources to improve the learning environment for students. By addressing these development needs, Mayoka can become a thriving community, contributing to the overall growth and prosperity of Tanzania.
