Africa Foundation has been active in Northern Unguja since 2006 with dedicated staff in the region since 2016. Our community work is currently focused on 6 communities directly associated with Mnemba Atoll. Africa Foundation have been working with Kigomani community since 2020, assisting Kigomani Primary School with the construction of a block ablution toilets, repairing and restoring classrooms, and installing gutters and water tank to harvest rainwater. Africa Foundation have also built ablution toilets for the clinic and periodically assist with medical supplies.
Kigomani community leadership approached Africa Foundation for assistance in raising funds to refurbish the clinic and build an incinerator. A survey has indicated this will include the restoring of some walls and roof structures, the re-plastering and painting of walls, installation of quality plumbing and piping, wiring connections for electricity, and drainage system.
The need for a healthcare centre led by the community of Kigomani with the help of community leadership to build a clinic. In 2020 the community successfully completed the main clinic building structure and doctor’s accommodation, Africa Foundation assisted with the construction of ablution toilets, the Government appointed staff, provided a doctor and nurses as well as equipping the clinic.
Kigomani clinic currently employs 9 staff members, this includes 4 nurses, a doctor and other general staff in charge of maintaining the facility. The current infrastructure at the clinic does not meet government requirement, the main clinic building is rundown, there is no incinerator to dispose medical waste, there is no electricity and no water supply. The clinic is facing possible government closure, people from Kigomani will have no choice but to walk to a minimum of 5km to Matemwe hospital if the clinic gets closed.
