Africa Foundation and &Beyond are working with the local community leadership, KwaZulu Natal Government and other NGO’s to progressively establish boreholes, water storage tanks and water access points.
Community members in the Maputaland region dig up dried riverbanks for water. These unclean and unsafe sources are linked to sporadic outbreaks of diarrhea and often passed water-borne illnesses which is a common cause of death for young children.
Fixing and installing boreholes will go a long way in improving sustainable access to clean, safe and healthy water sources to more than 800 families in these isolated villages. This will help significantly reduce the number of waterborne illnesses. Each borehole has an estimated capacity of 4500 liters per hour supply from groundwater. This has a potential to be used as a sustainable source of supply that contributes to the vegetable garden and poultry projects, helping with poverty reduction and ensures sustainability of livelihoods.
KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) is the third smallest, and second most populated province in South Africa. Children and youth make up 67% of its population. The Province is engaged in an array of economic activities, most notably agriculture, tourism, manufacturing and trade.
Despite its positive economic attributes, KZN suffers great disparity and poverty. Africa Foundation in collaboration with &Beyond has been working in the uMkhanyakude District of KZN since 1992. Within this District Africa Foundation supports 5 rural communities; Mduku , Mnqobokasi and Nibela in Big 5 Hlabisa municipality and KwaNgwenya and KwaJobe situated in Jozini . The municipality is located along the coast in the far north of the KwaZulu Natal Province and is home to the Isimangaliso Wetland Park.
