Hibemandla primary school is located in the community of Lillydale in Mpumalanga, it was established in 1992. In 1994 the government made significant investment of infrastructure at the school. Africa Foundation has been actively involved with Lillydale community since 2000.
There are currently 584 students enrolled at the school, who are taught and care for by 15 staff members (18 teachers, an administrator, 3 food handlers and a caretaker. The borehole at Hibemandla School is not working anymore, as a result the flush toilets at the school are currently not in use, leaving only 3 toilet blocks available. Students hardly wash their hands after using the toilets anymore, they also bring their own drinking water to school. Africa Foundation is raising funds to fix the borehole and upgrade the pump to one that can support a school.

The available infrastructure at the school consist of 10 classrooms, an admin block, a kitchen, a hall that is used as a classroom and 5 blocks of toilets. In rural communities, schools are often severely under-resourced and inadequate facilities hamper the educational development of learners. These conditions impact on both the teachers’ ability to work effectively as well as the learner’s ability to concentrate and perform. Africa Foundation with assistance from generous donors have in the past assisted the school with the construction of toilets and drilling a borehole.
