Hardworkers Creche is situated in Hluvukani (Mpumalanga, South Africa) and was established in 2002. It was the first preschool facility in Hluvukani, built by the community itself. There are currently 68 children enrolled at the Creche, ranging in age from newborn to 5-year-olds. There are 5 staff members that look after the children – 3 teachers, a cook and a cleaner. The creche currently consists of two classrooms and 2 pit toilets. One classroom caters for children aged 4 – 5 and the other is divided into 2 sections, one for toddlers and the other is used as an office and storeroom.
These facilities do not meet the requirements of the Mpumalanga Department of Social Development. As a result, they do not qualify to receive financial support from the Department. The Department recommends that Early Childhood Development Centers should offer at least 1.5m² of indoor space per child. The Creche currently provides less than 0.5m2 per scholar. The Department also requires that meals should be prepared in a safe and hygienic environment. There is currently no kitchen at the Creche, with food being prepared outside. Meal preparation is often disrupted when the weather is bad.
The Hardworkers Creche’s Governing Committee and the Hluvukani community leadership have asked Africa Foundation to help them fundraise and improve the infrastructure to meet the Department of Social Development specifications. Africa Foundation have been actively involved in Hluvekani since 2016, supporting an improvement in their education facilities, providing bursaries for students to attend university and supporting the development of local hustle-preneurs.
Africa Foundation is fundraising to ensure that the infrastructure has a double classroom, Enviro Loo toilets, kitchen and dining area, borehole and play area, to meet The Department of Social Development standards and be recognised as a fully-fledged preschool.
