Africa Foundation first partnered with the school in 2013 to build a kitchen. Vuyelani Primary School was established in 1993. It was named in with the intent of engaging the community to come and resettle in this area, hence “Vuyelani” which in Xitsonga means “come back to the ancestral land”. The school offers Grades R to 7. Africa Foundation would like to continue the development of the infrastructure at this school and enable it to serve the youth in Lillydale. We are actively fundraising to support the construction of a block of three brick classrooms – following Department of Education specifications.
In 2014, further support was provided in the form of four classrooms in total to date. In 2013 when we first partnered with the school, the majority of the school structures were wooden shacks, which were ineffective in protecting the 600 children enrolled at the school from the elements. Assistance was also provided for the development of a vegetable garden, which not only provides fruit and vegetables for school meals but also produces enough to sell, so that the school can earn some money. The school has 19 teaching staff, the current enrolment is 721 students. The infrastructure consists of 22 classrooms, of which 6 are mobile units, 10 are plastered and 6 face brick classrooms. The infrastructure is far from adequate, the mobile classrooms being particularly small and cold in winter and loud when it is raining. Despite these challenges, the school produces good grade 7 results.
