Mlimboni is one of the small villages in the North of Zanzibar Island. Like many villages in rural areas, there is a shortage of facilities and service delivery is almost non-existent. Mlimboni pre-school was established because the only other primary school close enough was 12 km away. The village chairman rallied support to build an open shaded area for children to use as a pre-school, and upon completing their mandatory pre- school year, the first cohort of pupils were supposed to start attending another primary school, but they were still too young to walk to the other village. Africa Foundation are fundraising to build another block with double classrooms and 36 desks to accommodate the next cohort of children and to allow the current pupils from preschool to move to Grade 1 and for the Grade 1 children to move to Grade 2.
Construction of the facility commenced in December 2020 and was wrapped up and completed in July 2021. Upon completing their mandatory pre-school year, the first cohort of pupils were supposed to start attending school at Kijini Primary School, but they were still too young to walk to Kijini. The community leadership with permission from the Ministry of Education decided that Mlimboni Pre-School be extended to become a primary school. Mlimboni Primary School has an enrolment of 155 pupils, 85 girls and 70 boys who are taken of by 4 teachers and 9 support staff. There school has a total of 4 classrooms, a block of ablutions with 4 cubicles and a water tank.
