Misigyo community is located within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area (NCA), 180km from Arusha in North East Tanzania.
Misigyo Primary School was established in 2001 with an enrolment of 122 children. The first buildings at the school were two incomplete classrooms and an office. Today there are 950 children enrolled, from Pre-school to Grade 6. The school has 9 teachers and 9 classrooms, a small make-shift kitchen, two ablution blocks, and 7 cottages to accommodate the teaching staff. Despite the many challenges that are common to rural schools in Tanzania, Misigyo was awarded Best School in the District in 2014 and has continued to maintain very high standards.
The school Principal has expressed his concern over the limited number of ablutions for the size of enrolment; with only 20 long drop ablutions available, the pupil : ablution ratio is 48:1. The pressure on these ablutions has led to their degradation and it is critical that additional ablutions are provided, for health and hygiene, as well as the preservation of current facilities.
Africa Foundation is hoping to raise funds to build twelve additional ablutions.
