The community of Mbirikiri is located in the Serengeti District, Mara Region of Tanzania. The community has an approximate population of 2,500 people across 350 households. There is one primary school and no secondary school.
Mbirikiri Primary School was established in 2008 and is located on the northern border of Serengeti National Park. Africa Foundation began engaging with the community in 2018, and the development of the school was one of their identified priorities. The school has 510 students enrolled, but only 2 completed classrooms, and 4 that are not complete, which the community has attempted to build as and when they have had funds. There are 6 ablutions, creating a ratio of 85 children per ablution.
The school currently employs 7 teachers whereas 14 would be a more appropriate to reduce class sizes to a more reasonable number.
Africa Foundation has recently secured the funding to complete the partially built classrooms, construct an additional two classrooms and new blocks of 6 ablutions. Work will start in March 2020.
